Should You Buy The All-New Apple AirPods/AirPods Pro?

Trying to decide between Apple AirPods and AirPods Pro? The Apple headphones are appealing to you, but we have some important information you need to know. There are many differences between these two wireless earbuds, although they may look the same.

The original AirPods are instantly recognizable and extremely popular, but the AirPods Pro represents a culmination of years' worth of work on true wireless technology, meaning they're a higher-end version of the Apple earbuds - and they cost more too.

In addition to being ultra-easy to use, the AirPods Pro also features more features, including adaptive EQ, noise cancellation, and spatial audio. The best true wireless earbuds of 2021 are those that accomplish that goal.

Perhaps it seems like we're always recommending the AirPods Pro. However, there are other factors to consider. AirPods Pro is substantially more expensive than standard AirPods, so many people are wondering whether or not it's worth upgrading to the AirPods Pro or sticking with the more affordable AirPods from last year.

Every individual will make a different choice. Below, we've outlined a few of the key differences between AirPods models so you can choose the right one.

In addition, when iOS 15 launches in September, both earbud models will be getting some upgrades, including integration with Apple's Find My app. Conversation Boost is also coming to the AirPods Pro, which will make it easier to hear face-to-face conversations, and Siri will announce notifications.

{Update: It was hard enough to pick between the Apple AirPods and the AirPods Pro, now there is a new pair of AirPods to consider.

    Here they are, the Apple AirPods 3. They are quite impressive. Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking (as with the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max), adaptive equalization, and longer battery life are among the key features of these highly anticipated new buds.}

#1: Noise Cancellation Is Available On The AirPods Pro

One of the biggest differences is that the AirPods Pro uses active noise cancellation rather than just passive noise reduction. It is possible to customize the level of noise cancellation on the Pro, and it can even be set to Transparency Mode so you are able to hear everything around you without taking off the headphones. As a matter of fact, it has no downsides.

There is no active noise cancellation offered by the regular AirPods, and their tight seal only offers noise reduction.

    • You should buy these noise-canceling headphones if you want to reduce unwanted noise

#2: Water Resistance Is One Of The AirPods Pro's Main Advantages

In contrast to the non-water-resistant AirPods, the more expensive AirPods Pro are IPX4 water- and sweat-resistant, which means that they are more suitable for the gym than the AirPods.

The only thing you shouldn't do is take your new high-end AirPods Pro into the pool - if you drop them or let them get submerged for too long they will rust. A pair of swimming headphones is what you need if you want to wear them in the pool.

#3: Customized Eartips Are Included With The AirPods Pro

If you're unsure of how to use the ear tips, Apple will assist with a quick audio test and can tailor the sound to suit your ear structure to help you find the right fit. The AirPods Pro will offer more customization than the Apple AirPods' one-size-fits-all design: inside the box, you'll find a variety of ear tips.

You're stuck with the plastic ear tips that come with AirPods – although some people find them more comfortable than silicone ear tips that have to be pushed into your ear.

#4: The Pressure Valve Is Built Into The AirPods Pro

It's possible to feel uncomfortable wearing in-ear headphones because there is a small buildup of pressure inside your ear that is annoying but not life-threatening. Apple borrowed this feature from the Powerbeats Pro to combat this problem with the AirPods Pro.

One of the perks of the Pro series of headphones is the ability to reduce pressure buildup, especially for people who are sensitive to it.

#5: Adaptive EQ is included with the AirPods Pro

There are also internal microphones inside the earbuds that can measure volume. In addition to being crucial for effective noise cancellation, these can also be used for features such as Adaptive EQ, which optimizes sound quality according to your physiological type.

What makes it work? By using a custom high dynamic range amplifier on the AirPods Pro, Apple says the AirPods Pro "automatically tune the low- and mid-frequencies," resulting in "pure, incredibly clear sound and extending the battery life" at the same time. Intriguing!

#6: It Offers A Wider Soundstage & Slightly Improved Clarity

In terms of performance, there are not many differences between the two AirPods, but some users have noticed that the AirPods Pro offers a greater level of clarity and a larger soundstage. With a larger chamber, the AirPods Pro offers a greater frequency range due to its ability to spread sound more evenly.

#7: The AirPods pros are Shorter & Stouter Than The AirPods

The AirPods Pro is longer and sturdier than regular AirPods, but this is more of an aesthetic difference than a functional one. Compared to the classic model, the Pro's tips don't extend as far down your ear, but they cover more space because of the larger housing.

Some find them unappealing, while others enjoy their futuristic appearance. Apple is unmistakably recognizable on either model.

#8: It costs considerably more to buy the AirPods Pro

Last but not least, here is an area where regular AirPods may have a chance: The AirPods Pro is almost twice as expensive as the regular AirPods (£159 / £200) that come with a standard case.

With a wireless charging case instead of a regular case, the regular AirPods cost £199 / £250, putting them within reach of the AirPods Pro.

AirPods are regularly discounted, however - particularly for the regular models.

#9: It supports spatial audio, which is a difference

The AirPods Pro noise-canceling headphones are supported by Spatial Audio in iOS 14.

Dolby Atmos, which creates a virtual sphere of sound around you, works in 5.1, 7.1, and 7.1 channels - which means that if you're watching a film with a plane flying overhead, it will sound as if the plane is really overhead.

Furthermore, the AirPods Pro can track your head and your device to ensure the audio remains centered on your head. This allows for clever virtual Dolby Atmos.

Are there any similarities between the two?

In addition to their similarities, the two true wireless earbuds also have some differences.

It's truly wireless earbuds with similar-sized cases, and both have a battery life of over 24 hours with a battery case and around 3.5 hours per charge. In terms of soundstage/clarity, they are similar with only small differences. In addition to working seamlessly with iOS, they both feature Apple's new H1 Wireless chip that enables hands-free "Hey Siri" functionality.

    Which ones should you buy?

If you’re bothered by outside noises while at work or while you’re commuting, need water resistance for the gym, or are sensitive to pressure build-up in your ears, it’s probably worth paying a bit more for the Apple AirPods Pro.

But if your chief concerns are sound quality or battery life, you can save yourself a ton of money by sticking with the basic AirPods.

Of course, we suggest you read both our Apple AirPods Pro review and our Apple AirPods (2019) review to learn even more about them, but hopefully, you know a bit more now than you did five minutes ago.
